Post Funeral Hugs

Dream from 05/04/2008

Since I was young, I’ve written down sentences that appear in my mind just as it is getting quiet and drifting into sleep. Most of the time they seem like nonsense, strings of words tied together. They are bizarre and odd and beautiful. I have books and books and books of these subconscious thoughts. I got very good at training my mind to write these down and have used them as the starting point to many pieces of work. I have spent the past 20 years dissecting them and interpreting them in different ways, over and over.

There are roughly 90 minutes of REM sleep in a typical night where most dreams occur. REM also typically happens 90 mins after falling asleep. The following group of paintings uses a sleep sentence as a starting point. Through repetition, I see if I can discover meaning in these seemingly random thoughts by painting 90 paintings while getting lost in this sentence.

The result is somewhere in between sleep and circumstance.
